New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the world. Like every country, there is some crime, but if students are sensible, the rate of risks are very low. There is no religious tension in New Zealand. In 2009, New Zealand was voted safest country in the world.

Edenz is registered with the New Zealand government (NZQA), and is required to hold student fees in a Trust Account, so that they can be refunded if the student does not start the course for some reasons.

Every year an international survey plots the cost of living in major world cities. The 2006 survey gives London a score of 110, New York a score of 100, Sydney (Australia)  92 and Auckland 73, its ranking us 100th  on the list.

The Internet is widespread, and students have plenty of access to emails. Many students find it simple and cheap to get a new SIM card for their GSM phone while in New Zealand, rather than have to buy a new one.

Before you arrive in New Zealand to begin your studies at Edenz Colleges, you need to make sure you have a current passport and then apply for the correct visa or permit. International students should make sure they leave themselves plenty of time to allow for their visa application to be processed.

If you are studying for 12 weeks or more, you will need a Student Visa, otherwise a Visitor Visa. Some countries have an agreement with the New Zealand Government for Visa-free entry. For more information please visit the NZ Immigration website at www.immigration.govt.nz

By law, all international students need to have health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand, no matter on a Student Visa, or a Visitor Visa. You must show us the proof of your insurance on your first day at school. You can arrange your own insurance from your home country, or we can arrange it for you in New Zealand. The following guidelines apply to International Students only.

Insurance Guidelines: All international students coming to NZ are required by law to take out medical & travel insurance for the full period of their study. Insurance should start from when you leave home to travel so you are covered for any emergency, and include any trips to other countries, or home, during this time.

The Ministry of Education suggests that Insurance policies include: 

• emergency evacuation/repatriation
• accompanying relative cover
• personal effects and personal liability cover
  

Desirable additional components are

• loss of fees due to emergencies
• mental illness
• continuation option if you may want to extend your studies.

Most of our students are over 18, and some courses require that. However, for General English, we can take students as young as 11, but they are usually in Study Tour groups.

For General English, we take Beginners, but it is important that students at least know the alphabet before they arrive. Other courses have specified entry requirement – see each course for details.

If you have paid for airport pickup, we need to know your flight details as soon as you have confirmed them.

A Student Visa is a certificate fixed in your passport that allows you to travel to, and enter  New Zealand for the purpose of study. It is usually issued for multiple (more than one journey) entry.

A Student Permit is a certificate or stamp in your passport which allows you to study in New Zealand. It will state the expiry date, the name of the school, and the course of study etc.

You will need to apply for a Student Visa if you are not a New Zealand citizen or Resident, and are coming to New Zealand to study full time for longer than three months (Your spouse or partner and children who wish to accompany you may apply for a Visitor or Student Visa).

If you are coming for less than 3 months, you will need a Visitor Visa. (Some countries have a “visa free” agreement with NZ)

Normally, a Student Permit is issued at the same time as a Student Visa. It is easy to extend your Student Permit for further study or training when you are in NZ, as long as you have had good attendance, and made good progress.

Yes. Our Homestay department carefully selects suitable homestays for our students. Their homes are regularly inspected to ensure quality and safety. 

We can arrange an airport pick-up someone to meet you and personally transfer you to your homestay from the airport.

Sometimes there are one or two other students, but we usually do not put students from the same country into the one homestay.

Yes. All students are placed in single bedrooms. Other facilities such as bathrooms, TV and phone/internet (if available) are more commonly shared with the host family.

Not always. However, Edenz has lots of Internet-connected computers, and students have a free allocation per week, and can pay a small fee for additional usage. There are also lots of Internet cafes in Auckland.

The host family provides breakfast and evening meals from Monday to Friday, and breakfast, lunch and evening meals on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

Many families do have pets. Cats and dogs are both common animals. You can choose to live with pets or not by ticking the relevant boxes on your Edenz Registration form.

It is considered polite to offer your help with things like setting tables, and washing and drying dishes.

We try and find homestays that are fairly close to the centre of city, where we are located. Many buses and trains come this way, and sometimes students can even walk to Edenz. On average it takes between 10-30 minutes by bus or train.

If you have an international drivers license, you can drive here for up to one year from the day you arrive in New Zealand. If you stay longer, you will need to change it into a NZ license - for some nationalities that means sitting a theory test only, and for others both theory and a practical driving test.

If you are currently enrolled with Edenz Colleges for more than 4 weeks and your fees are paid, you can get a Student ID card.

No, but having a Student ID Card gives you access to student discounts and can be used for identification when sitting exams.

When your enrolment has been confirmed, students may come to the reception to apply for a new card.

Your first Student ID card is free; however, if you lose or damage your card a replacement will cost $10. If your card expires and you are still studying with us you can get an updated student ID card free of charge (only if you have 4 weeks or more study left).

To get a card you need to send us a verified passport size photo of yourself. Your photo must meet the following requirements:

1. Taken within the last twelve months
2. Full front view of face
3. No hat or head covering (except for religious reasons)
4. No sunglasses or dark tinted lenses
5. Must be on good quality paper (no photocopies accepted)
6. Scanned photos are unacceptable

Your Student ID Card will be valid from the date of your confirmed enrolment till you finish your course.

If your student ID card has expired and you're still studying with us we'll send you a new one free of charge. Come to the reception for more information.

You need to come to the reception, along with the $10 payment to apply for a new card.

You can report any computer faults to the reception along with the desk number.

Yes, all the computers have USB ports. The ports are located underneath the disk drives, on the left-hand side when you are facing a computer.

We keep the lost property at the reception, where no-one can browse through it. If you don't find what you're looking for, visit the reception.

The same goes for any stuff that is picked up by Security or the cleaning staff working at Edenz: the lost items are taken to the reception.

Yes. There are power points supplied in the common room and library.

Yes, you can connect to the Internet from your laptop if your laptop is enabled for wireless access.

Follow the step by step guide for installation:
1. To begin with, look at the wireless connection icon. It should be on the bottom right of your desktop.
2. Click on the icon once and then click on the connection called “Edenz_Wave”.
3. Enter the password: ZZZZZ11111
4. After this, you will need to change your LAN settings.
5. Open your Internet Explorer (IE)
6. Go to Tool, select Internet Options.
7. Under the Connections tab, click on LAN settings button.
8. Click the button for Automatically detect settings.
9. Also click the button for Use a proxy server for your LAN and Bypass proxy server for local addresses.
10. Enter 10.150.0.1 in the Address box, and 8080 into Port box.
11. Press the OK button to connect.
12. Now you can enter your usename and password for internet.

Yes. You can print a page double-sided, just be aware that double-sided printing charges you for 2 pages i.e. 20c.

No. Only the programmes already on the computers can be used. Loading other programmes is prohibited for security and copyright reasons. This also applies to instant messaging software, such as MSN Messenger and ICQ. If you try to load other programmes you will be blocked. Other specialised software you need for University purposes will be available at the departmental labs. Contact your department office or lecturer for advice.

We are aware that there is a range of additional specialist software that some students would like to be able to access from Edenz and all requests are considered. All requests made via the suggestion form and the IT will be considered.

You can study any course at Edenz, as long as you meet the entry requirements. All of our courses are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Yes, but only if you are a visitor or worker in New Zealand.

For the ESOL students, classes run from 9am to 12.15pm Monday to Friday (two classes of 90 minutes each). Part time students usually study in the morning classes. Full time students have another two hours of classes in the early afternoon, after the lunch break from 1pm to 3pm.

Business Diploma programs start at 9am but the timetable varies, depending on the modules and lectures students are enrolled in. Students will be advised at enrolment of their timetable. Film and TESOL timetables vary as well, depending on each course, and will be advised prior to, or upon enrolment. 

Our book policy varies from course to course. In the ESOL classes, materials fee is included in the Registration Fee. We also recommend that you buy an English dictionary. Class handouts are included in the tuition fee of Business Diploma, TESOL and Film programs but you may be required to buy your own textbooks and workbooks.

Students will get a certificate if you have an ESOL course, and provided attendance and behavior criteria are met.

 

In Business, Film, and TESOL courses, students must pass the required assessments, then students will be awarded a certificate or diploma.

Beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. Students can improve quite quickly from level to level, because they are in an English speaking environment. However, progress at the beginning is often slow, and all students should have knowledge of the alphabet and basic spelling before starting at Edenz, otherwise progress will be very slow.

On the first day each student takes a short placement test (oral and written) to determine the student`s English level and to make sure we place the student in the right class level. There are regular tests to show if the student is ready to go up to the next level.

For English classes you may start any Monday (except for the two week Christmas holiday break), and the minimum course length is two weeks.
